BuddhaHand - "The Mudra"

Here are some questions to ponder before you read on.
- How do you differentiate the statues of the Buddha?
- Does the eye or face tell you its meaning?
- Have you ever pay an attention to the hand gestures?
- Do you know the statue is made to certain aspects of the Buddhist teaching?

The TEN Most Important Mudras.

Statues of the Buddha were produced from the fifth century onward. The sacred of the representation is reflected in the artistic goal of creating an aura of equanimity, perfection, and holiness. The large number of rules governing the execution of a portrayal or a statue requires an erudite understanding of Buddhist symbolism. Any Buddha figure made by a skilled artist exhibits a multitude of characteristics that communicate subtle meanings and intentions to the viewer.

The most important of the characteristics are perhaps the MUDRAS, or hand gestures, of the Buddha.

The most important mudras are:

3. Dharmachakra Mudra.............(gesture of turning the wheel of the teaching)
4. Bhumisparsha Mudra.............(gesture of touching the earth)
5. Abhaya Mudra.................. (gesture of fearlessness and granting protection)
6. Varada Mudra.................. (gesture of granting wishes)
7. Uttarabodhi Mudra............. (gesture of supreme enlightenment)
